November 14th, 15th, and 16th, 2024

The AR-PA – Cultural Tourism International Congress 2024 takes place within AR-PA CULTURAL TOURISM, the fair for Cultural Heritage, Culture, and Cultural Tourism. This edition, held in 2024, is an evolution of the AR&PA Fair for the Restoration of Art and Heritage, first launched in 1998 in Valladolid.

PRESENTATION

The final Dialogue Space of the 12th International Congress AR&PA 2022 focused on New Challenges for Heritage in a Digital World. We now aim to turn that concluding reflection into one of the primary objectives of the International Congress AR-PA Cultural Tourism 2024, addressing the new challenges of cultural heritage. The goal is to seek transversal connections between heritage, cultural activities, cultural tourism, and economic resources, to define new research and innovation pathways that respond to emerging challenges.

The congress proposes a broad, interdisciplinary debate on the relationship between cultural heritage, cultural actions, and sustainable tourism, intending to create innovative models and envision a new future for heritage.

The congress seeks to maintain the high level of reflection from previous editions, taking a significant step forward in innovation and offering a new, integrative vision of cultural heritage. This vision embraces heritage management, artistic production (in its broadest sense), and the vital role that cultural institutions play—key actors in the congress—all while promoting a vision of high-quality cultural tourism that benefits everyone.

Ideas Laboratory

The AR-PA Cultural Tourism International Congress 2024 is not intended to be a conventional gathering, but rather an Ideas Laboratory, a space for experimentation and idea generation—ideas alive and valuable for public administration and the various stakeholders involved. Beyond the usual presentations and talks, the congress aspires to be a premier space for reflection and innovative proposals.

Congress Themes

  1. Innovative cultural heritage
  2. Sustainable cultural tourism
  3. Future cultural actions

Premise

The future of humanity, both globally and locally, must be inherently connected to the future of cultural heritage. To the extent that we can preserve cultural heritage as a living legacy of the past and project it into the future, we will be able to live sustainably on this planet. Without a future for heritage, there is no future for humanity. However, the challenges of modern times require a deep reassessment of the meaning of heritage and demand new approaches in a constantly evolving society. These challenges call for new methods of study, analysis, protection, intervention, resource utilization, and innovation. In this way, cultural heritage will become an active agent of wealth, tourism, culture, and cutting-edge knowledge, serving as a key element in regions with such valuable heritage as Castilla y León.

ARGUMENTS

The AR-PA Cultural Tourism International Congress 2024 is based on a series of key arguments that guide participants and encourage the public to take part in all the activities organized before and during the Congress.

Without the living and dynamic preservation of cultural heritage, the future of a democratic and progressive society is uncertain. Without the active presence of the past, there is no future.

Cultural heritage does not belong solely to the authorities; it belongs to everyone. Its conservation and dissemination are tasks that must involve various public and private stakeholders.

Cultural heritage embodies the essence and values of ideas and culture from the past, whether distant or recent, which has shaped our present and allows us to envision the future. We are what we have lived; without it, we will not be.

Cultural heritage should not remain solely focused on protection and preservation; it must be accompanied by high-quality and sustainable cultural tourism, which fosters the dissemination, understanding, and care of the past.

Cultural heritage can only be preserved as a legacy of the past if it is understood within the framework of an inspiring project for the future—one that is essential to the construction of a modern, democratic, and egalitarian society.

Cultural heritage must embrace a paradigm shift, undergoing a cultural metamorphosis that provides it with new meaning within the social and demographic order.

Cultural heritage must play a fundamental role in generating cultural and economic resources with rigour and quality.

Cultural heritage must be understood with absolute transversality, impacting all sectors of society.

Heritage is one of the greatest expressions of culture, and we must achieve an integrative vision in all aspects so that it becomes a driving force behind other cultural actions.

It is essential to establish a close relationship between heritage and cultural tourism—not only in economic terms, but also as a generator of knowledge, culture, and ultimately, well-being.

OBJECTIVES

In the face of the disappearance of values, the legacy of the past can only be preserved if understood as a tool for the future—a future in which the elements of that past, whether ancient or recent, remain alive and useful, becoming a necessary generator of resources.

MECHANISMS

To organize the Congress, all available resources will be implemented to facilitate dialogue and build the Laboratory of Ideas. Although, mechanisms will be put in place to support this premise:

The Congress is not confined to a conventional room; it must reach beyond, experimenting with new communication systems managed with rigour and seriousness.

Challenges will be presented to society well in advance, gathering diverse opinions through online surveys and similar methods, which will be brought to the debates of the Congress, strengthening the Laboratory of Ideas.

Each invited speaker, whether in the Main Lectures or Dialogue Spaces, will be asked to propose an idea for the future of Heritage and Cultural Tourism at the end of their presentation. These ideas should range from innovation to economic resources, while always maintaining quality as the primary objective.

Throughout the Congress, attendees will be able to make real-time contributions, fully participating in the debate, creating a dynamic and innovative event.

During the Congress, various challenges will be proposed to participants, who will be asked to solve them in real-time, transforming from mere listeners into active agents of the Laboratory of Ideas.

Invited Lectures

The Congress, conceived as a true Laboratory of Ideas, will feature only five invited lectures, allowing maximum time for Dialogue and Innovation Spaces.

Dialogue Spaces

In response to the questions we raise, we aim to offer a dynamic Congress that maintains a high intellectual level while providing a fresh perspective on the debates and dialogue that must be present in today’s society regarding the value of heritage. Four possible Dialogue Spaces are proposed:

  • Dialogue Space 1: Heritage and Cultural Actions
  • Dialogue Space 2: Heritage and cultural tourism
  • Dialogue Space 3: Heritage and comprehensive knowledge
  • Dialogue Space 4: Heritage as an innovative tool for the future

In these Dialogue Spaces, contributions from specialists with diverse backgrounds and perspectives will be welcomed. The discussions, in-person communications, and brief video reflections by various specialists, including members of the Scientific Committee, will be interspersed throughout the Congress. This will be accompanied by the active and dynamic participation of the audience through traditional means and new technologies, such as apps and social media.

Each Dialogue Space will be moderated by two members of the Steering Committee, including the Scientific Directors of the Congress.

Innovation Spaces

Replacing traditional communications, the Congress will include short innovation presentations that align with the Congress’s themes. These presentations will focus on innovative, reflective, and critical proposals that address the questions raised during the Congress. Unlike the traditional thematic sessions, these short presentations will not be organized into separate thematic panels but will share a single Innovation Space, fostering more fluid dialogue through variety and contrast. The aim is to achieve greater transversality and reflection.

Each Innovation Space will be moderated by a member of the Steering Committee.

Proposal for Short Innovation Presentations

Proposals for presentations should be sent to the Organizing Committee at labppa@gmail.com using the attached form (maximum 1 page), including:

  • Title and subtitle
  • 5 Keywords
  • A 500 words text
  • 3 images
Languages accepted: Spanish, English, French, Italian, and Portuguese.

The proposals for short innovation presentations will be evaluated by the International Scientific Committee through a peer-review system, ensuring total critical independence and international scientific standards. Based on the Scientific Committee’s recommendations, approximately 30 presentations will be selected for in-person presentation at the Congress. All accepted short presentations will be included in a publication following the format and length set by the Steering Committee. The texts will be collected in digital format and submitted to the Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage for subsequent publication in the form of proceedings.

The deadline for submitting proposals has ended

AWARDS

Several awards will be granted to short presentations for the innovative nature of their content and presentation. These awards will be given based on a popular vote by all attendees, as was done at the 2022 Congress.

SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE VIDEOS

During breaks between different parts of the program, videos featuring members of the International Scientific Committee will be shown. These videos will offer reflections on the topics to be discussed at the Congress, ensuring their visible presence throughout the event.

PARTICIPATION

To ensure maximum interaction and dynamism, the audience will be able to participate in real-time dialogues with questions and/or reflections through a dedicated app. The audience will also take part in voting to award the most outstanding short presentations.

INFORMATION

Presenter

The Congress will have a communication specialist who will act as the continuity presenter throughout the three days of the event.

Attendance Certificate

Once the congress is over, a digital certificate of attendance will be issued to all participants who have attended at least 80% of the sessions.

ECTS Recognition

Undergraduate and Master’s students from the University of Valladolid who justify their attendance at the Congress will be granted 1 ECTS, as approved by the University of Valladolid’s Recognition and Transfer Commission. This will be contingent upon submitting a report summarizing the most significant aspects and conclusions of the Congress. The report will be evaluated by the professors responsible for organizing the Congress.
